“I would recommend Sporting Edge to any leader or team looking to improve their performance. Their work has made a real impact on me and the South African Cricket Team.”
In 2008 the South African Cricket Team were seen as a highly talented side which hadn’t yet realised its potential. With tours of England, Australia and India scheduled, they were reaching a defining time in their personal and team journey.
After making a successful impact in working with Captain Graeme Smith at the Indian Premier League and meeting coach Mickey Arthur, Jeremy Snape was offered the role of Performance Coach to the Proteas travelling with the team around the world.
Jeremy started his involvement with the Proteas on their tour of England. After senior players had interrogated him for being a ‘double agent’ he was allowed to wear the green kit of South Africa! During this initial period he built strong relationships with members of the playing and management staff in one-to-one discussions and informal team environment.
Piecing various trends and clues together Jeremy was able to support the captain and coach in their quest for better and more consistent performances. By understanding the individual and team psychology, the key leaders were able to develop practical interventions to enhance performance.
Jeremy’s role expanded from the one-to-one psychology support to delivering group coaching interventions around concentration, mental toughness, communication and decision making. Another key element to this role was a creative project to articulate the South African team culture and work with the team to develop a stronger team culture.
Jeremy's support continued for three years through victories in England and against Australia where South Africa recorded an historic Test Series victory on Australian soil. During this period the South African team rose from fourth in the world rankings to number one.
